Notice: All visitors need to call the jail 24 hours in advance to schedule a visit with an inmate.

Property Drop Off: All property dropped off or shipped into the jail must be approved and searched before it is accepted into jail. Property will only be dropped or shipped in into the jail for the following reasons; Treatment, STS, Work Release and In Person Jury Trial. If you need to drop off property or have property shipped into the jail for a different reason it must be pre-approved by the Jail Administrator or Jail Programmer. The bag must not be larger than the following dimension 18 x 14 x 8. The Bag cannot contain any of the following items; Alcohol or Drugs, Liquids, Tobacco, Sharp Items, Lighters or any other hazardous material if brought into a secure facility. If the item is not searched it will not be accepted.

The Brown County Jail and Law Enforcement Center was constructed in 1994. The jail is a 56 bed facility that houses male and female offenders. Jail Administrator Steve Appel is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the jail and is assisted by the jail programmer and 14 correctional officers.

There are many reasons a person may be detained in the Brown County Jail. The following is a list of some of those reasons:

  • A person has been charged with a crime in Brown County and is awaiting trial. These crimes can range anywhere from a misdemeanor traffic violation to a serious felony.
  • A person has been found guilty of a crime and is awaiting sentence.
  • A person has been sentenced to less than a year for a crime and is serving that sentence in the Brown County Jail.
  • A person has been sentenced to a year or more and is awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections to serve that sentence.
  • A person may be held in the Brown County Jail on a warrant from another jurisdiction and is awaiting transfer to that jurisdiction.

Regardless of the reason someone is being held in the Brown County Jail certain services must be provided. The following are some of the services and programs the jail provides.

  • Food Service - the jail must without exception serve inmate’s three balanced meals each day.
  • Healthcare Service - the jail provides access to medical staff that includes a public health nurse, doctor, and mental health professionals. All correctional officers are trained medical 1st Responders.
  • Mail Service - the jail processes all incoming and outgoing mail correspondence. This mail is scrutinized to detect criminal activity and court order compliance.
  • Commissary Service - the jail operates a general store type of service. This allows inmates to purchase basic need items such as personal hygiene items, writing items, over the counter healthcare products and food products.
  • Banking Service - the jail maintains an account for every detainee. The inmate may use this account to purchase items from commissary, co-pays for medical services and other incurred expenses.
  • Phone Service - the jail provides through an outside vendor phone service for the inmates. This includes the sale of on-line phone cards and a complete tracking and recording of all calls made with the exception of attorney calls.
  • Educational Service - the jail offers many different educational programs that include GED, and assistance with substance abuse.
  • Spiritual Service - the jail offers a wide range of religious services to meet the needs of all inmates.
  • Work Program - the jail maintains different types of work programs that include Huber Work Release, Sentenced to Service (STS) and an in-house worker.

All of these programs and services help maintain a productive, structured, disciplined atmosphere and are carried out in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the Brown County Jail.
