Guide for Slay The Spire (2024)

Here I will briefly introduce each character and mention any achievements that are particularly suitable for or only obtainable with that character. Each character starts with a special relic that is unique to them. They also have another unique relic that will upgrade the original one. This upgrade is only available as a boss relic. I'll mention these as well.

The Ironclad

The Ironclad is the first playable character available to you. He has the most starting HP of any character, as well as one of the best starting relics in Burning Blood, which heals you 6 HP after any combat. This can be upgraded to a relic giving you double the HP gain. His special starting card is Bash, which makes the enemy vulnerable and therefore receive more damage. This is a very good option for a card upgrade as soon as possible, unless you have received a similar card that you prefer like Clothesline or Uppercut. Possible ways of building a deck with Ironclad include: maximizing strength through cards and relics and then playing Heavy Blade or similar big attacks; maximizing defence and then using Body Slam to use that block in an attack; or a deck using Searing Blow which can be upgraded any number of times, potentially resulting in a super-powerful attack by the end of the game. More deck archetypes are possible, see the Wiki page for a list.

Ironclad has quite a few expensive cards, so this character can work well with Snecko Eye, a relic which randomises the costs of cards in your deck. Personally, I hate this relic but I've seen people smashing the Heart with it so it is possible. Anyway, over your dozens of hours of playtime you will have lots of chances to experiment.

There are two achievements for getting lots of block that are easier with Ironclad, although the Defect character can also work relatively easily. To get a lot of block you should first find cards that actually give you that block, such as Impervious or Flame Barrier for example. Then you need a way to keep it from turn to turn, i.e. Barricade. And then you need a way to exponentially increase it to stupid amounts - Entrench is excellent here as it doubles whatever block you have. At some point you barely even need any attack cards as you will easily outblock any attacks and just keep building more and more block. Add a Body Slam which deals damage equal to your block and you will mash anything. Eventually you'll get these:

  • Impervious

Have 99 or more Block during combat.

There is one achievement for having 50 or more strength that is easier with the Ironclad but also theoretically possible with any character. You can use the Jaxxed card from a random event if you come across it, but it can also be done (probably more easily) using Ironclad's many strength-giving cards, most importantly Limit Break which doubles your strength. If you upgrade it it does not exhaust which, while not always a good thing, is very handy for this cheevo:

  • Jaxxed

Have 50 or more Strength during combat.

Silent

Silent is the first character you unlock. She only starts with 70hp, so she is rather weak. Her starting deck is the largest with 12 cards - all the other characters have 10. This makes her less suitable for certain achievements related to deck size. Many of her cards discard and draw other cards, and even her starting relic, Ring of the Snake, draws two extra cards on turn one. As usual there are several ways to achieve victory with the Silent, with the two most common being through the use of poison, or using shivs (a zero-cost attack) to just repeatedly whack foes until they die. In my opinion, both of these archetypes are a lot of fun when you pull them off, and the Silent is probably my favourite character because of this.

There are three achievements for the Silent that are related to poison or shivs. Firstly, poison and the Catalyst achievement. There are five cards that apply poison as well as two relics - Twisted Funnel and Snecko Skull. There is also a poison potion that you might find. The most important card for the cheevo, however, is, unsurprisingly, the Catalyst card. This doubles the poison of an enemy, or triples it if the card is upgraded. You need to apply 99 poison to one enemy for the cheevo, but that only means you need to play an upgraded catalyst two or three times in one combat if your enemy has a bunch of poison already. You'll need a few of the poison cards to play first, but with those and the (preferably) upgraded catalyst cards, you'll quite easily get:

  • Catalyst

Apply 99 or more Poison on a single enemy.

The second poison-related achievement requires you to kill three enemies in one combat with poison. Obviously you need at least three enemies. The card Noxious Fumes applies 2 (3 upgraded) poison to all enemies at the start of the turn, so this is potentially a good card for this cheevo. The Specimen relic is also good here, since it transfers a dead enemy's poison to another enemy, meaning you can poison one enemy, kill it with the poison, and then the poison will, with any luck, kill another enemy when the first one dies. Repeat for a third enemy. Just to point out again that the kill has to come from the poison itself - it is not enough that the enemy has poison while you kill it with something else.

  • Plague

Defeat 3 enemies with Poison in a single combat.

For the shiv achievement you need to play ten in a turn. This is easy with a few copies of Blade Dance, Cloak and Dagger, and/or Infinite Blades. Use a Cunning potion or the Ninja Scroll relic to help. Storm of Steel transforms all your cards to shivs, so if you have a lot of draw this works well - you could also play a couple of Blade Dance cards and then Storm of Steel to ensure you have enough shivs for one turn. Play ten in one turn and you'll get:

  • Ninja

Play 10 Shivs in a single turn.

Defect

The Defect is the third character you unlock. He (it?) is a kind of automaton with a unique resource - orbs. The advantage of orbs is that they do things at the end of every turn without you needing to spend any extra energy, or you can normally "evoke" them through playing cards for stronger effects. Lightning orbs damage enemies. Frost orbs provide block. Dark orbs increase in damage output until you play them to devastating effect (hopefully). Plasma orbs provide more energy per turn. The Defect's starting relic gives you a free lightning orb at the start of combat. The power of your orbs is dependent on focus, which can increase or decrease through cards and relics.

One achievement requires getting 25 focus in one combat. Defragment, Biased Cognition, and Consume are the cards that will give you more focus. Consume will actually reduce the number of orb slots, eventually meaning you cannot have any orbs, but despite this your focus will continue increasing. Echo Form doubles the first card your play each turn, so this is pretty useful for getting a lot of focus more quickly. This achievement is easiest against a relatively weak enemy that will not scale, so that you can maintain your defence while increasing focus and not actually killing the enemy. When you have 25 focus you'll get:

  • Focused

Have 25 or more Focus during combat.

The second Defect achievement is for channelling nine plasma orbs in one turn. The Meteor Strike card is the best source of plasma orbs as it gives you three, You need to find a way to play this several times in one turn, most likely using Hologram to return the card to your hand when you have played it. Like most Spire achievements it requires some setup and some luck, but eventually you'll get:

  • Neon

Channel 9 Plasma in a single turn.

Watcher

The Watcher is the final character you will unlock. There are no achievements related specifically to her beyond the two for beating the game and completing the ending as mentioned previously.
