When it comes to off-roading, few places can compare to the rugged beauty and challenging terrain of Windrock Park. Nestled in the Cumberland Mountains of East Tennessee, Windrock Park spans over 73,000 acres, offering more than 300 miles of trails that cater to all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned off-road enthusiast or a newbie looking for adventure, Windrock Park provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable UTV experience.

Recently, the UTV Source team packed up our gear and headed out to Windrock Park to put the Segway Villain through its paces. As we pulled into the park, the excitement was palpable. With the morning fog rising over the mountains casting the perfect backdrop on the vast expanse of trails, we knew we were in for an epic adventure. Little did we know, the weather had some surprises in store for us.

The Segway Villain: A Beast on the Trails

Our weapon of choice for this adventure was the Segway Villain. The Segway was an instant curiosity to fellow riders in the parking lot at the Windrock General Store. One of the onlookers, who drives a KRX remarked, “I’ve heard great things about the Segway, but this is the first time I’ve seen one up close. This thing looks badass!” And it truly is.

For anyone new to Segway side-by-sides, the Segway Villain for its powerful performance and rugged design, the Segway Villain is built to tackle the toughest terrains. It’s also an amazing value. Starting at a mere $16,299 for the Villain SX10 S 64”, the Villain packs a punch. With a 1000cc engine delivering impressive power and torque, and features like adjustable suspension, high ground clearance, and advanced traction control, the Villain is designed to handle everything Windrock Park has to offer. Our Villain SX10 WP comes in a little higher at $19,969 due to the 72” width.

Trail Variety: Something for Everyone

Windrock Park boasts a diverse range of trails, each offering a unique challenge and experience. From rocky climbs and muddy paths to scenic routes with breathtaking views, there's something for every type of off-roader. Windrock’s trail system is marked with skill levels so you can choose your own challenge. We started our adventure on Trail 22, a moderate trail that gave us a good mix of obstacles and open terrain. The Segway Villain handled the rocky sections with ease, and the adjustable suspension made for a smooth ride over the rough patches.

Next, we tackled Trail 3, one of the park's more challenging trails. This trail features steep climbs, tight switchbacks, and plenty of mud and rock. The Segway Villain's advanced traction control and powerful engine really shined here, allowing us to navigate the tricky sections with confidence. The high ground clearance also came in handy, helping us avoid getting stuck in deep ruts and mud pits.

Bottom line - the Segway Villain took on every challenge trail 22 and 3 threw at it. The car was extremely stable in off-camber sections, it crawled up over all the rock obstacles in our path, while stability traction was never in doubt.

Weather Woes: Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding

Midway through our adventure, the weather took a dramatic turn. Dark clouds rolled in, and soon we were caught in a heavy downpour. The rain quickly turned the trails into a muddy mess, and flash flooding added an extra layer of challenge to our trip. Navigating the slick, waterlogged trails required all the power and control the Segway Villain had to offer.

Trail 51, which we had planned to ride next, turned into a veritable river. We had to carefully pick our way through the deep water and avoid hidden obstacles. Despite the adverse conditions, the Segway Villain performed admirably, proving its worth as a robust and reliable machine.

Largely being West Coast desert guys, this was a new experience for us. But I wouldn’t let the weather deter you. According to the great people at the General Store, we got caught up in a once-in-a-decade storm, or as they called it, “a gully wash.”

Meeting Up with Friends and Past Builds

One of the highlights of our trip was meeting up with a few friends who owned UTVs that we at UTV Source had built and sold in the past. It was great to see the Polaris PRO XP and Kawasaki KRX 1000, both custom builds we had poured our expertise and passion into, out on the trails. The Polaris PRO XP showed off its power and agility, while the Kawasaki KRX 1000 demonstrated its impressive durability and smooth handling. Seeing these machines in action, handled by their enthusiastic owners, was a rewarding experience and added a special touch to our adventure.

Scenic Views and Hidden Gems

Windrock Park has stunning scenery all around. As we navigated the trails, we were treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. We took a break at one of the park's many overlooks, where we could see for miles. In fact, according to our friend Brian, you can touch four states with your eyes from this viewpoint, including Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky. The beauty of Windrock Park is truly something to behold, and it adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the off-roading experience.

We also discovered some hidden gems along the way, like old mining ruins and secluded waterfalls. These unexpected finds added a sense of adventure and exploration to our trip, making it even more memorable.

The UTV Community at Windrock Park

Windrock Park delivers the sense of community common to all off-road enthusiasts. Throughout our adventure, we encountered fellow UTV riders who were eager to share tips, stories, and a helping hand if needed. The camaraderie among off-roaders at Windrock Park is truly special, and it adds to the overall experience.

Camping and Amenities

Windrock Park is well-equipped to accommodate off-roaders with a range of amenities. The park offers numerous camping options, from primitive sites to full-hookup RV spots. We opted for an Air BNB in nearby Oliver Springs, TN but for our next trip, we’ll definitely plan for a primitive campsite to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the park. After a long day of riding, there's nothing quite like sitting around a campfire, swapping stories, and enjoying the peace and quiet of the great outdoors.

For those who prefer a bit more comfort, Windrock Park also has cabins available for rent. Additionally, the park features a general store where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a shower house to freshen up after a day on the trails.
