Elon Musk wins back his $44.9 billion Tesla pay package in shareholder vote

Tesla shareholders have voted to restore CEO Elon Musk’s record $44.9 billion pay package that was thrown out by a Delaware judge earlier this year. Vote totals were not immediately announced. The favorable vote doesn’t mean CEO Musk will get the all-stock compensation anytime soon. The package is likely to remain tied up in the Delaware Chancery Court for months as Tesla appeals the rejection. The court ruled in January that Musk essentially controlled the Tesla board when it approved the package in 2018, and that it failed to fully inform shareholders who approved it the same year. Tesla has said it would appeal, but asked shareholders to reapprove the package at Thursday’s annual meeting.

Running out of marijuana, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket get approval to ship pot to the islands

Cannabis regulators in Massachusetts have issued an administrative order that will allow pot to be transported to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands for the first time. The order Thursday comes as Martha’s Vineyard was about to run out of pot, with one dispensary temporarily closing in May and the other saying it would close by September. Although Massachusetts voters opted to legalize marijuana more than seven years ago, the state commission has previously not allowed transportation of pot to the islands.

1 of 2 abducted Louisiana children is found dead in Mississippi after their mother is killed

Police say a Louisiana woman has been found dead in her home and her two young daughters were abducted and found hours later in Mississippi. One was dead and the other alive. Investigators say a Louisiana resident suspected in the deaths and abduction was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi. Chief Deputy Jimmy Travis of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Office in Louisiana says the suspect had a car belonging to Callie Brunett and had the woman's 6-year-old daughter. The body of the woman's 4-year-old was found near the car in a wooded area in Jackson. Louisiana State Police issued an Amber Alert for the girls after their mother's body was found in her home.

Tropical rainstorms in South Florida lead to flight delays and streets jammed with stalled cars

A tropical disturbance that brought a rare flash flood emergency to much of southern Florida delayed flights at two of the state’s largest airports and left vehicles waterlogged and stalled in some of the region’s lowest-lying streets. Travelers across the area were trying to adjust their plans on Thursday morning after more than 20 inches of rain has fallen in some areas of South Florida since Tuesday, with more on the way. The disorganized storm system was pushing across Florida from the Gulf of Mexico at roughly the same time as the early June start of hurricane season, which this year is forecast to be among the most active in recent memory amid concerns that climate change is increasing storm intensity.

Gov. Hochul considering a face mask ban on New York City subways, citing antisemitic acts

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says she is considering a ban on face masks in the New York City subway system, following what she described as concerns over people shielding their identities while committing antisemitic acts. Hochul told reporters Thursday that what the policy would look like is not exactly clear but it would contain exemptions for health, cultural or religious reasons. She said she was in talks with lawmakers on crafting a bill. Hochul acknowledged that reinstating a ban would be complicated, since face coverings have become common on subways and elsewhere

Progress announced in talks to resume stalled $3 billion coastal restoration project

Louisiana coastal officials have reached agreement with a coastal parish to renew some preparatory work for a nearly $3 billion coastal restoration project. The agreement announced Thursday between the state and Plaquemines Parish means a stop-work order is being partially lifted, allowing site preparation to resume for the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion. The project is planned to divert some of the Mississippi River’s sediment-laden water into a new channel and guide it into the Barataria Basin southeast of New Orleans to rebuild wetlands. Ground was broken for the project last year, But it has drawn opposition and litigation from commercial fishers, oyster harvesters and others who fear damage to aquatic life.
