Wolfgang | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (2024)

If you want to play a character that makes you feel powerful in Don’t Starve or Don’t Starve Together, you can look no further than Wolfgang!

Wolfgang has the highest Damage Modifier inDon’t StarveandDon’t Starve Together, although Wolfgang must always be well-fed for him to attack at full-damage. Wolfgang is also the only character who’s Damage Modifiers change based on their hunger; however, it can be comparable to Abigail’s Damage buff as it gets Darker.

Wolfgang is the second character unlocked in single-player Don’t Starveand is a playable character inDon’t Starve Together. Wolfgang is often referred to as a god-tier character in Don’t Starvesimply due to his very straight forward buff and lack of any significant debuffs. When paired up with a Wickerbottom inDon’t Starve Together, you will never have difficulty with being hungry, making Wolgang pretty much unstoppable.

So, is Wolfgang overpowered? No, Wolfgang requires players to have a decent grasp of the game, as new Wolfgang players tend to starve or become Insane. So, these are the best ways to reap all of the benefits of Wolfgang while avoiding all of the negatives in both single-playerDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together.

WOLFGANG’S DIFFERENT FORMS

As mentioned earlier, Wolfgang is the only character inDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together, who will alter forms based on his Hunger stats. Wolfgang has three different states, which are referred to as his Wimpy Form, Regular Form, and Mighty Form.

Whenever Wolfgang changes a form, he will stop to speak. During the time Wolfgang is speaking, the player will not be able to move him around, making him vulnerable to attacks.

Each of Wolfgang’s forms affects his Damage Modifier, Speed Modifier, and Hunger Modifier. Each of Wolfgang’s forms has a different appearance.

WOLFGANG’S WIMPY FORM

Appearance: Wolfgang will appear sickly with dark black rings around his eyes. His moustache will appear to be much smaller than all of his other forms, as none of the moustache will make it off of Wolfgang’s face.

Wolfgang will even become shorter as a way of making him seem pathetic.

Hunger Range:Below 100

Hunger Modifier: 1-1.5x Faster

Maximum Health:150-200 (100 Hunger = 200 Health >> 98 Hunger = 199 Health)

Damage: Wolfgang will do between 0.5x-0.75x damage depending on how hungry he is. Although Damage Scaling isn’t as dramatic as it is when Wolfgang is in Mighty Form, the majority of Wolfgang’s stats live in between integers, as I will cover later.

Movement Speed: 90%

WOLFGANG’S REGULAR FORM

Appearance: Wolfgang appears to be neutral, he is able to fit into all of his clothes, and his head seems proportional to his body.

Wolfgang is not a very muscular fellow, appearing to be leaner than his Mighty Form, though you can tell that Wolfgang is a fighter.

Hunger Range:Above 105 and Below 225

Hunger Modifier: 1.5x Faster

Maximum Health: 200

Damage: No Damage Buff

Movement Speed: No Movement Buff

WOLFGANG’S MIGHTY FORM

Appearance:Say hello to daddy as Wolfgang grows himself a large handlebar moustache and his head becomes double the size. Wolfgang’s shirt also rips right off, revealing more muscles than you can imagine!

Wolfgang’s Mighty Form should be easy to tell apart from the rest as he gains quite a bit of height.

Hunger Range:200-300

Hunger Modifier: 1.5-3x

Maximum Health:200-300 (300 Hunger = 300 Health >> 299 Hunger = 299 Health)

Damage:300 Hunger = 2x Damage >> 299 = 1.99x Damage

Movement Speed: 25%

WOLFGANG’S DEBUFFS

Wolfgang is a little scaredy-cat, even when he’s in MIghty form. Wolfgang suffers from 10% more Sanity loss from Monsters as well as the dark, making it important to get to know the best ways to keep your Sanity up.

If you’re struggling with Sanity, I recommend heading over to killMacTusk to get theTam o’ Shanter, which will provide players with 6.7 Sanity per minute without the need of crafting another item. I personally love using the Tam o’ Santer because it leaves your chest open for heavy-duty armour.

Otherwise, Wolfgang is pretty debuff free, other than the debuffs that he gets for being at low-hunger.

DON’T EAT UNLESS YOU’RE GOING TO BATTLE

I know it’s going to be tempting to keep Wolfgang in his Mighty or Normal form because you’re a bit stronger, but the reality is, you’re going to want to stay in the Wimpy Form while running around and gathering.

You can do a lot of small battling in Normal form, without the need of transforming into Mighty Form, though this will be a preference to you.

I KEEP STARVING AS WOLFGANG, WHAT DO I DO?

If you’re having issues with Hunger, there’s not much you’re going to be able to do in the early game, however, as soon as you get a chance to head into the caves to start attacking those Slurpers. 6 Slurper Pelts can be used to make theBelt of Hunger, which can help extend Wolfgang’s Mighty Form to about 5 Minutes.

The specifics according to the Wiki are the following:

….Wolfgang’s normal form will lose 67.5 [Hunger/Day] while his mighty form will lose 135/day…

If you are playingDon’t Starve Together, you can also get the HibearnationVest, which will require players to kill the Autumn Boss the Bearger. I highly recommend saving the Hibearnation Vest for the winter or cold seasons and using the Belt of Hunger during the warmer seasons.

WOLFGANG NERFS THE MEAT EFFIGY MECHANICS

Simply because of the way that Meat Effigies work, Wolfgang will take less damage from having 4 Effigies active. Although players will never be required to have 4 Effigies up at the same time, it’s a good thing to keep in mind that Wolfgang can stack them up with no fear of being low on health!

BEST FOODS FOR WOLFGANG

Wolfgang is going to take some getting used to as you’re going to want to be in control of when he is in his different Forms. I personally recommend using Meatballs when you are wanting to jump between Wimpy to Normal and Trail Mix or something that gives minimal food boosts when switching into Mighty Form.

If you don’t care too much what food you’re feeding, then just stick to Meatballs because they’re so cheap.

WOLFGANG’S BEST FRIEND IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER

It’s no surprise that Wolfgang’s best friend is the ever famous Wickerbottom. If you have a Wickerbottom on your team, say hello to unlimited food. Since Wolfgang is an omnivore, he has no difficulty eating anything Wickerbottom is ready to serve up.

If you want to have, an insanely powerful team add Maxwell to the mix. Though, I wouldn’t recommend Maxwell without Wickerbottom.

WOLFGANG’S FAVOURITE FOOD (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

If players are looking for more stats from food when it comes to Wolfgang, they should really feed him Roasted Potatoes.

Instead of providing 25 Hunger, they will provide Wilson with 40 Hunger.

MY LAST THOUGHTS ON WOLFGANG

As much as I love having a super-strong character on our team, I have to say that Wolfgang takes a bit of skill before jumping into.

Wolfgang’s Hunger doesn’t usually get me into the trouble of starving; however, I do often find myself questioning if I brought enough food on my journeys to stay in Mighty Form. If I had to choose between Wolfgang and WX-78, I would choose Wolfgang.

So, what do you think of Wolfgang? Do his Hunger Modifiers trip you out or are you good with them? Have you ever died of starvation with him? Let me know in the comments below
